Frequency and phase synchronization are essential to the distributed cable modem termination system (CMTS) to deliver bandwidth more efficiently over the same assigned frequencies. Synchronization is also important to providing on-demand programming and accurate billing. Microsemi led the definition of the DOCSIS Time Interface (DTI) server within CableLabs® and is the only company that offers CableLabs® qualified DTI servers. These servers deliver the most reliable and precise time and frequency synchronization available for cable networks, enabling cable operators to deploy new services while maintaining the flexibility to balance economics, scalability, functionality and carrier class reliability.
With the continued growth of data intensive applications lead by video services, access infrastructures are also under extreme pressure. As a result, cable operators are aggressively deploying the new Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP) architecture in order to increase their bandwidth offering to compete with telecom companies to provide revenue-generating multi-gigabit broadband services at lower TCO. As part of this deployment, the DOCSIS standard calls for the use of IEEE 1588 synchronization to the Remote PHY node.
