Frequency and phase synchronization are essential to the distributed cable modem termination system (CMTS) to deliver bandwidth more efficiently over the same assigned frequencies. Synchronization is also important to providing on-demand programming and accurate billing. As part of this deployment, the DOCSIS standard calls for the use of IEEE 1588 synchronization to the Remote PHY node.
