Video intercoms, which enable visitors to be viewed before they are addressed, are rapidly spreading in use as crime prevention concerns rise. The functionality of these products is also becoming more advanced, and products with wireless handsets for responding and monitoring, sensor monitoring, or video networking with TVs or mobile phones, are in the market. Recent models have even more functions, such as the use of a touch panel in the base unit, wide angle lens, recording images of visitors that came while nobody was home, or the ability to backtrack and playback video from before the doorbell was pressed.

To help designers realize these functions Renesas offers the high-function SH-MobileR Series, which has a built-in IP core for static and moving images and can directly control an LCD display. The R8C/3xT Series of microcontrollers with on-chip touch detector are suited for touch panel control.
